Ryan is a Research Engineer with the Electric Power Engineering Centre, working in support of the Joule Log Heating Project. From September 2011 to January 2015 Ryan was with DNV-GL Energy in the capacity of Test Engineer at the (formerly KEMA) High Power Laboratory in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Ryan was responsible for leading and executing Type-Test and Certification testing activities in the Medium Voltage Lab. Test objects included power cables, three-phase distribution transformers, circuit-breakers, auto-reclosers, switches, earthing switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors, switch-fuse combinations and metal-enclosed switchgear and control gear for their short-circuit performance and withstand capabilities, according to IEC and IEEE standards.

Ryan completed a Master of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Canterbury in 2011, with the help of scholarship support from the EPECentre. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours from the same institution in 2008.
